Questions About Allergies
Q: What makes an otherwise healthy nose sneeze and get congested, itchy, and runny?
A: For people with allergies, these annoying symptoms happen when allergens like pollen, mold, dust mites, and animal dander enter the nose. That's because your body mistakes allergens for dangerous invaders. When your body attacks these allergens, the nasal passages become inflamed. It is this inflammation that causes you to suffer with allergy symptoms. VERAMYST helps relieve the allergy symptoms of nasal congestion, sneezing, and itchy, runny nose. It also may help red, itchy, watery eyes in adults and children age 12 years and older with seasonal allergies.
Q: What is the difference between seasonal (outdoor) allergies and year-round (indoor) allergies?
A: Seasonal allergies, which some people call "hay fever," generally occur in the spring and fall when trees, grasses, and weeds release pollen into the air. Year-round, or perennial, allergy symptoms are usually set off by indoor allergens like dust mites, mold, and animal dander.
Q: What can I do to help my allergies?
A: Many people use medicine to treat their symptoms. VERAMYST, for example, treats a range of symptoms, including sneezing, congestion, and itchy, runny nose. You also can learn ways to allergy-proof your home.
Q: Can relocating improve my allergies?
A: Unfortunately, moving does not guarantee that your allergy symptoms will change for the better. If your allergies are seasonal and are triggered by pollens from local trees, grasses, and/or weeds, relocating within the same region of the country may not affect your allergies. In addition, new allergies can develop over time to allergens in your new surroundings. If you suffer from year-round allergies caused by household dust mites, molds, or animal dander, your symptoms would likely remain as before, unless your lifestyle changes (for example, you allergy-proof your home, or you no longer have a furry pet). As a result, experts agree that you should not plan a move on the basis of your allergies alone.
