Allergy Causes & Allergy Triggers

Know your allergy triggers so you can avoid them

The things that cause your allergy symptoms are called your allergy triggers. Know your triggers, so you can try to avoid them. Common allergy triggers include the following:

Indoor Allergy Triggers:

  • Pets. Dogs, cats, and other animals shed tiny flakes of skin called dander. Dander can cause allergy symptoms. Some people may also be allergic to an animal's saliva or urine.
  • Rugs and carpets. Floor coverings often have dust mites. These are bugs so small that you can't see them. They can trigger your allergies. Many people are also allergic to dried cockroach droppings and remains.
  • Beds. Dust mites and other allergens can be found in beds, including the sheets, pillows, mattresses, and box springs. Many people are also allergic to the feathers in comforters and pillows.
  • Curtains and blinds. Curtains and blinds can collect dust that may have dust mites.
  • Mold. Mold can cause allergic reactions. It is a type of plant that grows indoors in damp places like the bathroom.

Outdoor Allergy Triggers:

  • Trees, grasses, and weeds. All of these release pollen, which is a common allergy trigger.
  • Mold. Mold can cause allergic reactions. It can grow in damp places outdoors.
  • Doing yard work can expose you to pollens and outdoor molds.
